'Teenage Dream' - Katy Perry. Music Video

'Teenage Dream' - Katy Perry. Song Lyrics

You think I'm pretty without any make-up on
You think I'm funny when I tell the punch line wrong
I know you get me, so I let my walls come down, down

Before you met me, I was a wreck
But things were kinda heavy, you brought me to life
Now every February you'll be my valentine, valentine

Let's go all the way tonight
No regrets, just love
We can dance until we die
You and I, we'll be young forever

You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on, I can't sleep
Let's runaway and don't ever look back
Don't ever look back

My heart stops when you look at me
Just one touch, now baby I believe
This is real, so take a chance
And don't ever look back, don't ever look back

We drove to Cali and got drunk on the beach
Got a motel and built a floor out of sheets
I finally found you, my missing puzzle piece
I'm complete

Let's go all the way tonight
No regrets, just love
We can dance until we die
You and I, we'll be young forever

You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on, I can't sleep
Let's runaway and don't ever look back
Don't ever look back

My heart stops when you look at me
Just one touch, now baby I believe
This is real, so take a chance
And don't ever look back, don't ever look back

I'ma get your heart racing in my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
Let you put your hands on me in my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight

You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream
The way you turn me on, I can't sleep
Let's runaway and don't ever look back
Don't ever look back

My heart stops when you look at me
Just one touch, now baby I believe
This is real, so take a chance
And don't ever look back, don't ever look back

I'ma get your heart racing in my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
Let you put your hands on me in my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight

Change of Song

I and Jess have unfortunately had to make the decision to change our song. This is a result of us feeling that we were unable to capture the genre well enough to create a piece that would really reflect the genre. This has been a result of a number of factors. Such as finding it hard to gather much information on the genre when researching, and the types of locations, props, and costumes used, that were not available to us. Therefore we have changed the song to 'Teenage Dream' by Katy Perry. I was, at first, very concerned by our decision, as of the time we have, but i believe we can end up with a really good project at the end of this course. I now feel much more confident about our decision.

Looking at the Music Video for Audience Research

Lyrics to Audience

Analysing the Lyrics of the Song for Audience Research

The lyrics to ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’ tells the story of a young woman regretting her trust in a man, but almost searching through each moment of their relationship trying to identify what went wrong and why it ended. The video reinforces this message. She is shown sitting in a messy motel room in a number of shots that cut back and fourth between that and the primary shot of her walking the streets of an urban city. At the end of the video, when the singer walks through the door of the motel links to the two shots used previously. It allows the story to piece together. The story of a relationship ending is relatable to young audiences. Mainly male and female audiences over the age of 16 to around mid 20's; the story is appealing to this particular audience.

Lyrics to 'Tears Dry On Their Own'

"Tears Dry On Their Own"

All I can ever be to you,
Is a darkness that we knew,
And this regret I've got accustomed to,
Once it was so right,
When we were at our high,
Waiting for you in the hotel at night,
I knew I hadn't met my match,
But every moment we could snatch,
I don't know why I got so attached,
It's my responsibility,
And you don't owe nothing to me,
But to walk away I have no capacity

[Chorus:]
He walks away,
The sun goes down,
He takes the day but I'm grown,
And in your way, in this blue shade,
My tears dry on their own,

I don't understand,
Why do I stress A man,
When there's so many bigger things at hand,
We could a never had it all,
We had to hit a wall,
So this is inevitable withdrawal,
Even if I stop wanting you,
A Perspective pushes true,
I'll be some next man's other woman soon,

I shouldn't play myself again,
I should just be my own best friend,
Not fuck myself in the head with stupid men,

[Chorus]

So we are history,
Your shadow covers me
The sky above ablaze,

[Chorus]

I wish I could say no regrets,
And no emotional debts,
Cause as we kiss goodbye the sun sets
So we are history,
The shadow covers me,
The sky above ablaze that lonley lovers see,

[Chorus]

[x2:]
He walks away,
The sun goes down,
He takes the day but I'm grown,
And in your way,
In this deep shade
My tears dry

Things to do

I have a number of tasks I wish to complete. However i am unable to do so, until i am back at school with its resources. These tasks are:

- Scanning in my mind map of narrative ideas for the music video
- Scanning in pictures from the media books, of shot types i like and am considering using within the video (Annotation)
- Take pictures of jess in these shop types
- Compare these pictures to those from book
- Place my time plan on my blog
- Perhaps use a voki character for my audience research
- Look at fonts of album covers
- Look at album covers and posters in preparation for the advertising aspect of the project
- Upload contact sheets of images

Tears Dry On Their Own- Amy Winehouse

Song Choice

I and my partner Jessica Alecci had to consider what song we would choose as our final song in which we would make the music video for. Whilst considering this, we had to remember to consider what we had available too us. Whether that was locations, costumes, actors, filming equipment and props. We needed to choose a song from a genre that we would fully be able to re-create and include the typical connotations of that particular genre.
We wanted to choose a genre we were both interested in, as we felt that by doing this we would have a greater understanding of what the traditional conventions of the genre would be and therefore would find it easier to create a music video of this genre. As a result of this decision we chose the genre 'Indie Jazz'. It's a genre I and Jess are both interested in. We then had to narrow this down to one particular song. We looked at a range of artists and their songs, and considered what jess, as the artist, would be most comfortable performing, what we would be able to re-create regarding what we have available to us and also what we could create creative performance and narratives shots too. We chose the song 'Tears Dry On Their Own' by Amy Winehouse. I'm really pleased with this decision. Jess is equally pleased with the outcome, and had previously known the song before choosing and therefore knows the lyrics of the song which will be very beneficial to us when it comes to filming the song.

JS RECORDS

We decided to name our production company 'JS RECORDS'. This would be the company that would create the music video and its promotion, with that including a cover for its release on CD and also a magazine advertisement for that CD.

We created a Facebook page and also a blogger page in which to receive feedback from audiences.

We decided to include Jess’s name within the link as that way audiences would be able to specifically read about and updates regarding this particular artist. As we intend to use Jess’s actual name as the name of the artist we create as we feel that artists within the genre we are working in, use their own names within the music business rather than stage names.

Time Plan

Here is the time plan we made in order to allow ourselves to create and finish our project efficiently.

It allows us too see when our deadlines are and how much time we have to work on each aspect of the project.

Thursday 8 September 2011

Initial Planning

Today I and jess looked in to all the different genres of music. We looked at the styles of each genre, and the artists associated with that genre. We crossed off any genres we thought that would be too challenging and would not be possible to make within the resources we have. One of genres we really looked in to was indie jazz, and Amy Winehouse. We looked into this artist especially, as we both felt this was a artist whose songs we could really adapt too. It was also a really good idea as jess, who will be the actor of the video, felt comfortable with the artist and the songs and also has great knowledge on her songs, and therefore was already aware of the lyrics, if we were to choose such an artist. We also thought a a lot about each genre and whether we could be able to create a narrative to it. Regarding general ideas and whether we would have the resources to create all the connotations linked with specific genres.

Consideration of Research

As we begin to start to prepare for starting our new projects, i feel it would be a good idea, to look at past projects to see what kinds of research they performed as a way in which to help me with my own. The past years work is really successful, and I think I would benefit by considering some of the research they have also done. Some of these things are:
- Research in to ancillary tasks as a way in which to have a greater understanding of the forms and conventions of different types of media: whether that’s music videos, trailers or short films.
- Looking at audience, and target audiences. It would be a good idea to look at what appeals to different audiences, and when creating something for them, adapting these appeals to create a piece that’s successful.
- Considering copyright, and if this will become relevant to the option in which i choose.
- Looking in to costume, and how different pieces of costume reflect different ages of audience and the conventions of them also.
- Considering different genres of music, and genres of film. That way for which ever one i choose, I will have a greater understanding of what aspects and conventions i should be considering.
- Looking at different shots types, and how each of these can be captured, the ability to do them and the meanings they can create.
- General research into music videos, short films and trailers that way I can adapt the information i learn from each to creating a much greater quality piece.

Considering my Initial Ideas

As I begin to prepare and research into the project, I have started to consider some initial ideas that would be relevant to each possible project task; music video's, trailers and short films.
Miss placed us into groups, so that we could, as a group, begin to start thinking about ideas, even if we didn't want to use them as the final choice. I was working with Matthew Hill and Jessica Alecci.

Trailers-
Firstly we considered trailers, where in which, miss gave us three title examples and we had to choose one of these and create a trailer around it. We chose one and decided to create a trailer in the style of a thriller as it seemed to reflect the title in which we chose. We came up with the idea of a stranger obsessed with a ordinary young girl. We thought about shot types. Thinking the trailer would begin with quick shots of a busy sidewalk, with strangers, obliviously on their way to work and events of their day, and as this occurs there being a narration above it, with something along the lines of 'every day, one million people pass each other by, without even noticing; but what if one was watching'. It continues to show a quick summary of the film that helps to invite an audience in. It was showing shots with cliff-hangers, leaving audiences wanting more and ultimately wanting to watch it.

Music Video-
For the music video, we broke it down. We wrote down as many genres of music we could think of. We then chose a genre and wrote down a number of artists whose songs were in that style of music. We then chose one of these songs and considered how we would make a music video to suit it. Our group chose rap, this genre of music is not one of which i have alot of knowledge on, however my group did. It is also a genre of music that is quiet stereotypical, when it comes to a music video. It tends to have quick shots of the rapper 'rapping' but is very well known for its vast pieces of narrative scenes. Therefore we decided that regarding a music video that we would attempt to make, we would create narrative scenes that reflected the lyrics of the song.

Short Films-
My group and I found this the hardest idea to consider. We realised that short films have a extremely wide basis. As in, they really can be about, just about anything. We looked at a number of short films online, and found that the storylines were very unusual, but somehow worked. However many of them had meanings behind them and therefore we realised that the way in which we tried to reflect the meaning of our short film, could be done in a large number of ways. We watched one short film called 'moments'. This was not similar to anything I’ve seen before, and therefore when considering an idea for a short film our self, we tried to consider something similar to 'moments'. The film consisted of a large number of shots that changed very quickly, although at first this did not make sense, it was trying to portray the moments in our life that go un-noticed, as well as the ones we never forget. We felt this would be a great challenge to create something along these lines, however we did consider the idea of creating a short film about a topic that meant something to us, or an idea about 'life' that we've always had, and how we could portray this through a short film.

Skills that will help me this year

During my time on the course, so far, i have gained a number of skills that I feel will be very beneficial towards my new project this year.
I also have a number of skills that i wish to develop, as this will help progress my understanding and knowledge base within this subject area and more importantly regarding this particular area of media.

During the course of my project last year i learned how to work well both independently and as part of a team. This was very useful to me at the time, and will be this year as I will have the ability to continuously work towards finishing my project to the best of my ability, whilst also working as part of a team, learning to separate and take on role and also to adapt the voices and opinions of my partner to combine our ideas in to one piece.

I've learned to work efficiently to complete different tasks of my project in good time so that i am able to change or 'tweak' any tasks I am not happy with, it is also a great advantage as it allows me to work towards and meet deadlines set for me and for those that i set for myself.

I will be able to use the knowledge I obtained last year and apply and adapt it towards helping me with my project this year. I am able to use the knowledge that I know, such as that I’ve learned of target audience, what appeals to different people, who we typically connote certain audiences with. Representation, what we traditionally perceive and what is now perceived in a modern light. Conventions, different things we associate with particular things. For example things you would associate with a certain genre of music.

I hope by the end of this project and course I have developed my creativity, and that i will be able to create ideas and develop them in to more original and thoughtful suggestions for ideas towards practical pieces and that involved within them so that the creativity is reflected throughout my practical and perhaps even my thoughts towards theory.

Finally i wish to develop my skills and understanding of editing programmes, so that I am able to use them to their full extent. I think I will use programmes such as 'Adobe Photoshop' and 'I Movie'. Which we will be using on the course to create the music video and also the advertising we are creating alongside it.

Roles of the Group

Within my group for the project, it is only I and Jess. As there is just the two of us we have spilt the jobs of the project but have both been helping and conferring with each other throughout. Jess is going to be the performer, and will be featured within the music video and upon all of the ancillary pieces and i will therefore be responsible for filming the footage for the music video and for taking the photographs for the ancillary tasks. I have not had a massive amount of experience with the cameras, so this will be a bit of a challenge for me, however Jess has many skills with using the camera so will be able to help me and teach me along the way. Our next spilt of work was the editing of the music video, and the producing of the ancillary tasks. I have had some experience of the editing machines we will be using and therefore i am going to be responsible for editing the footage. The ancillary tasks require another type of programme called 'Photoshop' which my partner is very skilled in and she will therefore be in charge of that. We will constantly be conferring with each other throughout the work to combine both of our ideas. Jess is also going to be a great help as she has many creative ideas in comparison to me and will therefore be a brilliant way to produce some really creative practical pieces.

Considering Skills

During the last project I gained a number of skills that will become very beneficial to me throughout this new project.

- I learnt how to use the cameras, using them at different angles, using different lighting and also how to use them with other aspects of media, such as the computers.

- I learnt how to use the programme of adobe Photoshop in which I will be using for some aspects of this project. I learnt how to use different tools on the programme, creating different effects and generally how to create a practical piece of work.

- I learnt how to use 'BlogSpot' and also how to create a blog upon it; creating posts and uploading files and images. This is a great advantage to me as i will be using this to present my work once again.

- I learnt general things in which to consider on a practical and the effects in which they have; to consider costume, the way different pieces of costume suggest different stereotypes of people. Narration, the way a story can bring meaning to a song (if doing a video piece of work) and continuity, how a piece can flow, and relate. How all of these effect the practical, what they symbolise and the meaning they create.

- I learnt about target audiences, who in which my practical is to be aimed that, and how, by choosing certain choices, creates this appeal. Looking at both male and female audiences and both of all ages and the different aspects that appeal to each of them, and how you create these.

- I learnt about representation, how different things can represent different meanings or connotations, whether these meanings or connotations are modern; are they new looks upon such things, or traditional, traditional looks.

- I learnt about how to research before a project. How to analyse different genres of work and how to consider different connotations of each genre, and how they appeal to their own audiences.
